Closer to God

It was ten minutes past seven in the evening while I was working on my laptop in a plush hotel in the sleepy town of Bhopal. The monotonous resonance of the air conditioning in my room was the only noise interrupting the clicking of the keys on the laptop keyboard. There was but another sound. It started very faintly but it was giving me gooseflesh. From far off, as if from the other side of the hills of Bhopal came a high pitched but soft chant of Allah – hoo- Akbar. As it gained amplitude, I could feel the cold of inside the room for the first time, more so in my toes. When I looked from the wooden doors of the balcony, I felt as if the heavens were chanting the prayer. I could feel God for a moment and I closed my eyes just to hear the heavens.
